About this deal

In this book, she describes the harsh conditions of the original Workhouses and gives the history of two women who were badly affected. Cotterill's book was originally published by the Black Country Society in 1973 under the title "A Black Country Nurse at Large".

One of course knew of the reputation of the rougher parts of the docklands and stayed clear, one also knew of the rich history of those parts – after all, it was all in the name, wasn’t it: East India docks for East India company? Well you know when the next book in a series is about to come out and you can't remember all the main details of the previous books? She argued that the method shown in the movie, far from being fairly quick and painless, was in fact almost invariably fatal to the mother. This final book in Jennifer Worth's memories of her time as a midwife in London's East end brings her story full circle.

The sixth series is set in 1962 and touches on domestic violence, an explosion at the local docks, interracial marriage, female genital mutilation, mental health, and introduces Reggie, a recurring character who has Down syndrome. Jennifer Worth trained as a nurse at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading and was later ward sister at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in London, then the Marie Curie Hospital, also in London. John the Divine and many others like them to keep medical care going amidst heavy bombing, most of which was concentrated in the Docklands. The production responded that the series was a period drama, not a documentary, and "highly accurate to the time it depicts". Letters to the Midwife is a wonderful collection of correspondence received by Jennifer Worth, offering a fascinating glimpse into a long-lost world.

Q. The tide seems to be turning back towards a more natural approach, and many women are choosing a midwife. But while Jennifer witnessed brutality and tragedy, she also met with amazing kindness and understanding, tempered by a great deal of Cockney humour.
