About this deal

I was literally moved to tears as newly qualified embalmer William, goes above and beyond when a huge tragedy befalls Aberfan. Home to William Golding, Sylvia Plath, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sally Rooney, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Max Porter, Ingrid Persaud, Anna Burns and Rachel Cusk, among many others, Faber is proud to publish some of the greatest novelists from the early twentieth century to today.

The book itself was well written with interesting characters having to handle difficult situations and I was super impressed to learn this was a debut novel. However, it is 1966, and the tragedy at Aberfan is unfolding, with elbalmers needed in the small town. Throughout the story I regularly thought of William as a kind hearted and genuinely good boy who developed into a man with these same traits.

William is such a complicated character and the relationships he has, with his friends, his family and just about everyone else he meets are so layered and complex that it takes forever to unravel them all.

I’m estranged from my mother, I haven’t spoken to you, my best friend, since I left here, and I won’t have children.
